Mandatory was founded in 1997 offering locally designed, urbane, quality men’s fashion alongside service; styling advice, custom fit and tailoring. A rare gem, the independent menswear store, Mandatory operates as a classic men’s outfitter with a constantly developing mostly local fashion range from tee shirts to suits and accessories. 17 years on Mandatory is extremely popular.

Manufacturing menswear in Wellington, New Zealand is not without its challenges, but it is rewarding, we love doing it and ultimately we believe this is best practice from environmental/ ethical and design perspectives. Producing locally allows us to be economical with valuable cloth stocks and expert labour. Using our resources efficiently with in-time production allows us to offer a custom fit to order service for the same price as garments off the rack. Designing and producing successive in-season capsule collections enables us to deliver limited edition designs and maintain our long standing reputation as providing value for money.

Good clothes aren’t cheap and can’t be with quality cloth, design and skilled manufacture content. Our clothes are not inexpensive, they are exceptional. Come in and see us.
