Dunedin Gasworks Museum Company Information
General information
Travel back in time to see one of the largest founding operations Dunedin!
The Gasworks opened in 1863 and provided the gas necessary to illuminate city streets via
streetlights similar to those currently erected in Dunedin’s Octagon. The museum is suitable
for all ages and provides an authentic educational experience for all, as the site has been
maintained to portray its near-original condition.
The Engine House of the Gasworks Museum, a Category 1 Heritage site, features five steam
engines, from a 1860s beam engine to a 1960s Reader vertical engine, most of which run
every Sunday and are given necessary maintenance every Tuesday.
The Fitting Shop, also a Category 1 heritage site, was recently upgraded with structural and
aesthetic improvements. It is used for many functions: a small library; hosting meetings,
classes, and workshops; a working Forge; and the museum’s main point of entry with the
reception desk.
The other buildings on site, such as the famous tilted chimney and a boiler room, feature
their own unique draws such as heritage Edwardian architecture.
Stop by the Gasworks Museum during opening hours for a self-guided visit or an organised
tour! We guarantee you will learn something each time you visit.
